August 2014 U S SUV And Crossover Sales Rankings Top 90 Best Selling SUVs In America Every SUV Ranked

2015 Audi Q3
The Toyota RAV4 was Americas leading utility vehicle in August 2014, though it remains nearly 38,000 sales back of the segment-leading Honda CR-V through the first eight months of 2014.

Audi sold its first 243 Q3 crossovers in August. Think the Q3 is small? We are not far from the days of the Q1. Mercedes-Benz will begin reporting U.S. GLA sales soon, and BMW has been selling their small X1 in America since August 2012.

Premium crossovers are led by the more midsized Lexus RX, Americas 19th-best-selling SUV/crossover overall. The RX will also be joined by a smaller sibling soon, a Q5 (and probably Q3) challenger called the NX.

The RX is 25,319 sales ahead of the next-best-selling Acura MDX, 30,755 sales ahead of the Cadillac SRX, 38,898 sales ahead of the Acura RDX, and 40,109 sales clear of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the highest-selling European-brand utility vehicle in America.

There were important improvements introduced in last Octobers ranking of vehicle sales. Prior year figures now include the actual numbers from last year, not just the percentage increase from last year. As a result, weve included vehicles like the Honda Element and Mitsubishi Endeavor, nameplates which collected sales in the first eight months of 2013 but not this year. At any time, click the Rank column to return to the original format. If youre on a mobile device, you may need to choose the full version of the site (at the bottom of the page) in order to use the sortable function.

Reminder: these are 2014 year-to-date rankings, but you can sort vehicles by July volume by clicking the July 2014 column header, or you can rank vehicles by improvements or declines using the % columns. Or, most importantly, you can list automakers together by selecting the SUV/Crossover column header.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these vehicles by selecting a make and model at GCBCs Sales Stats page.

* Italicized, asterisked, unranked lines are nothing more than available breakdowns, already included in the models total, not in addition to the models total.
^ Escalade here does not include sales of the EXT, which is shown with pickup trucks.
Rather than listing the 500L with the Mini Paceman and Countryman in these SUV/crossover rankings, its with cars in large part because it is not available with all-wheel-drive. The placement of numerous crossovers often prompts disagreement, but consider the vehicle types name: crossover. By its very definition, it crosses over from one category into another. The very act of calling, for example, the Toyota Venza a car or a utility vehicle requires ignorance of the fact that the Venza (or Outback, Crosstour, Encore, Countryman, 500L) is a square peg that cant be squeezed through a round hole. Total figures are subject to change as a BMW USA glitch has created some confusion between the X4 and X6 numbers, and thus the totals.

Minivan Sales In America October 2014 YTD

2015 Kia Sedona
Sales of minivans in the United States declined 2% in October 2014, the first such year-over-year decrease since February of this year.

In fact, Americas best-selling minivan, the Chrysler Town & Country, posted an increase in October 2014. Its twin, the Dodge Grand Caravan, slid 14%, and their joint volume was down 6%. Their market share, however, held strong at 50.7%, down somewhat from 52.8% a year ago but a rather mighty figure, nonetheless.

The Kia Sedona was perhaps the biggest minivan story in October. With a radical new design, relative to monobox layouts at least, the Sedona is a competitive vehicle once again. Sales more than tripled to 2376 units, a 1700-unit improvement.

Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America September 2014 YTD

2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class off road
Mercedes-Benz USA sold their first 991 GLA-Class crossovers, also known as CLA-Class hatchbacks, in September 2014. Well quickly see how the GLA fares in comparison to its two most direct rivals. BMW sold 1840 X1s in September, but X1 sales have fallen 14% this year. Audi sold 1092 Q3s in September, the Q3s first full month on sale.

These are the tiny contenders in the luxury SUV sector. (Some would add the underpowered, questionably-styled, much more common, and significantly less costly Sonic-based Buick Encore into the mix. 3848 were sold in September.) Move up a notch in terms of size and/or price and the Audi Q5 is currently battling the Acura RDX for U.S. sales supremacy.

Sitting in GCBCs driveway this week is the fast version of the most popular Audi in America, the SQ5. Its wonderful, and its also been around for quite a while in its current form. Yet Q5 sales have steadily risen every year since it went on sale in 2009. The Q5 outsold the RDX by ten units in September but trails the RDX by nearly 3000 units heading into the fourth quarter.

Acura is also a dominant player in the three-row premium crossover race. MDX volume is up 39% this year. The Lexus RX is the only premium brand utility vehicle which sells more often than the MDX.

Back to the GLA, its worth noting that the term crossover applies here about as well as it does anywhere. The GLA clearly crosses over, and back, from one category to another. (This also tells us just how useless the term "crossover" really is.) The GLA250 4Matic is less than four inches taller than the CLA250 4Matic sedan, 60 inches compared with 56.6, but its 10.7 inches shorter, road to roof, than the Mercedes-Benz ML350 4Matic.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly U.S. auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBCs Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank luxury SUVs and crossovers any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

GCBC isnt here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains youll see the XC70 listed with luxury cars as well as with SUVs and crossovers and the Touareg with luxury SUVs and mainstream SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
